Buying pencils, notebooks, clothes and even computers for the new school year will be a little easier for families, thanks to legislation sponsored by Senator Tim Bivins.
Passed by a unanimous vote of the Senate April 9, Senate Bill 2892 creates an annual sales tax holiday during the period from 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August through midnight of the Sunday that follows nine days later.
“I am pleased to be part of a bipartisan group of Senators who are sponsoring a nine-day sales tax holiday in Illinois. It will provide some measure of relief for families who typically have to spend a lot of money to get their children ready for school,” Senator Bivins said. “A sales tax holiday could also generate extra business for stores in communities that border other states.”" /> Skip to Main Content
